Chan Hung-yin (7/10)

Chan was born in Taishan, Guangdong, a city known as ‘Home of Music in Guangdong’. He was trained in dizi at the Guangzhou XingHai Conservatory of Music where he was under the tutelage of Chen Tim-shou and Luo Decai. He is currently president of the Hong Kong Alumni Association of the Xinghai Conservatory of Music.


His passionate love of the Chinese wind instruments of xiao and dizi, which spans more than five decades, and his rich performing experience have allowed him to develop his own style by assimilating the merits of other artists. He commands a full spectrum of performing techniques, and the notes he produces have pure tone colours, delicate emotional nuances, and excellent control of volume and strength. The dizi music coming from him is often imbued with his own insights, both on music and life, as well as necessary reinventions.


For more than thirty years since he resettled in Hong Kong, Chan has toured many countries in the world as a member of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. He was also invited to give solo recitals in South Africa, Canada, Macau, Shenzhen, Taishan, Zhaoqing, Nanning, Hefei, Tianjin, Shenyang, Harbin, Hainan and Beijing etc. He is currently a dizi instructor at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and the Department of Music of the Hong Kong Baptist University. Some of his best known performances are the dizi concerto, Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai and The Swallow Spreads Its Wings.
