Chang Se-han

Chang Se-han is currently Acting Erhu Principal with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. She was born in Taichung, Taiwan in 1994, and received her first training in huqin under Liao Min-Hui and later Hsu Cheng-Yu. She graduated from the Tainan National University of the Arts where she studied Chinese Music under the tutelage of Professor Ou Kuang-Hsun, and in Composition under Lu Yun.

Chang developed a keen interest in participating in various competitions, and came first in erhu (with Distinction) for five consecutive years at the Instrumental Competition organized by the Chinese Music Association of Taiwan between 2006 and 2010. She was presented the top honour of the Tainan National University of the Arts, ‘Star of TNNUA’, in 2011 and 2015. Other outstanding results in competitions included multiple first-prize awards: in the National University Music Competition - Nanhu in 2014, the Chiuko Traditional Orchestra’s Chiuko New Talent Musical Instrument Competition in 2016, as well as the National Chinese Orchestra Taiwan’s NCO Huqin New Talent Contest. She was a finalist in the 10th Chinese Golden Bell Award for Music presented by the Chinese Musicians’ Association in 2015.

Chang has amassed a lot of performing experience. She was the former concertmaster of the TNNUA Chinese Orchestra, Erhu Principal of the TNNUA Chinese String Orchestra, and Associate Concertmaster of the Dachung Chinese Orchestra. She often performs erhu concerto with the National Chinese Orchestra Taiwan, Hsinchu City Youth Chinese Orchestra, TNNUA Chinese Orchestra, Chiuko Traditional Orchestra and the Dachung Chinese Orchestra.

Chang’s discography includes A Reading of Lo Leung-fai (2012), recorded with the TNNUA Chinese Orchestra; the Taiwan premiere of Desolation II – Autumn, in the album Bounty (2013); and as soloist in the album String Songs, recorded with the TNNUA Chinese String Orchestra (2015).
