Founded in July 1996 by Fung Ying Seen Koon temple, the Hong Kong Taoist Orchestra (HKTO) is Hong Kong’s only orchestra specialising in the promotion of Taoist culture through traditional music. Since its founding, it has compiled a wide range of classic melodies from Taoist rituals and arranged them for Chinese orchestra, performing at over 200 concerts in Hong Kong and overseas. The ensemble has also released four albums, which have received widespread acclaim from Taoist institutions and the music industry. In August 2011, as part of celebrations to commemorate its 15th anniversary, the orchestra held a concert with the theme ‘Joy in Ephemeral Existence’. In light of the enthusiastic response from the audience, the HKTO decided to stage a series of further concerts, and subsequently received an invitation to make regular performances at the annual Hong Kong Culture Festival.
In 2001, the Fung Ying Seen Koon temple and the HKTO organised the first Taoist Music Festival, which aims to bring the world of Taoist music to a wider audience. The festival is now held annually, and has made appearances in numerous cities across the Chinese-speaking world including Hong Kong, Beijing, Taipei, Singapore, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Nanchang, Wuhan, Changzhou, Shanghai, Lanzhou, Kunming, Jilin and Xi’an. The Taoist Music Festival also provides a platform for the HKTO to engage in exchanges with other Taoist music groups and promote the art of Taoist music.
