Koh Choon Eiow

Co-Artistic Director of ‘approaching theatre’, Koh Choon Eiow is an award-winning contemporary theatre director, playwright, actor and an Asian Cultural Council grantee. He graduated from the Malaysian Institute of Art where he trained in Theatre; he also holds a Master’s degree from the Chinese Culture University in Taiwan. He is critically acclaimed for his directorial efforts, and has won many accolades: he was one of the finalists in the Taishin Arts Awards in Taiwan; winner of Guling Street Avant-garde Theatre’s ‘Programme of the Year Award’ and Judges’ Grand Prix; and winner of Taipei Fringe Festival ‘Fringe Star Award’.

Over the years, Koh has kept his focus on the history of the diaspora of Asian ethnic groups and issues arising from it. He has frequently been invited to Hong Kong, Macao and Southeast Asia to work on joint projects with various multi-culture networking groups. The process has sparked interactive exchanges, reflected a shared concern over survival, initiated intellectual discourses on the aesthetics of directing and acting, and explored continuous training of the body and consciousness. His directorial angles are recognised as unique, while the narrative is sharp and precise, flexibly transferred between multiple contexts.
