Qiao Jianzhong was born in 1941, a native of Yulin, Shaanxi. He was the former Director, Research Fellow and supervisor on the doctoral degree programme of the Chinese National Academy of Arts; Distinguished Professor of the Fujian Normal University, Shanghai Conservatory of Music, China Conservatory, and Hangzhou Normal University; President of the Chinese Council for Traditional Music (2006-2018); Associate Editor of Music Research (2004-); on the Editorial Board of People's Music and Music Art; Advisor to the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and the Singapore Chinese Orchestra; Rayson Huang Fellow, Department of Music, University of Hong Kong (1998); and Professor, Inaugural Chair, of the Qian Renkang Rostrum of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, 2004.
He was presented the title of ‘a Professional with Outstanding Contribution to the Nation’ by the Government of China in 1992 and was listed in the 26th edition of the Cambridge Who’s Who registry (1997). He is the author of ten books on Chinese folk songs and Chinese music in general, and was the editor and chief editor of eight collections such as The Chinese Music Yearbook (1990-1992), A Complete Collection of Chinese Music, Chinese Gongs and Drums, An Encyclopedia of Chinese Traditional Arts – Book on Music, An Introduction to Music, A Guide to Classical Archives in Chinese Musicology – Book on Traditional Music and A Dictionary of Chinese Music – Book on Erhu; over 20 types of reference books and collections of academic papers such as A Geography of Chinese Music – Shanxi, Shaanxi and Inner Mongolia Regions. He was presented with the Life Achievement Award by the China Nationalities Orchestra Society and Dean’s Special Award by the China Conservatory of Music.
