Wang Kai-han

Pipa virtuoso of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, Wang Kai-han joined the HKCO in 2022. She got the offer as the top candidate of the Master’s degree from the Graduate School of Chinese Music at NTUA and graduated in 2021. She currently serves as an instrumental instructor at Tseung Kwan O Government Primary School, Po Leung Kuk Laws Foundation College, and Ying Wa Primary School. She was studied under renowned musician Lu Mei-tuan, Wang Xiu-zhen, and Cheng Wen-xin.


Wang has achieved outstanding results in numerous competitions since early age, winning first place for three consecutive years in the New Taipei City and Kaohsiung Student Music Competitions. During secondary school, she was invited to perform the Pipa Concerto Spring and Autumn with the Kaohsiung Chinese Orchestra. While studying at university, she was awarded the “New Talent Champion” title for three times at the Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying), as well as at the Taipei Theatre and Concert Hall. In 2022, Wang received three major honours at the 29th Taipei Folk Music Competition — Second Prize, the Best Interpretation Award for Seeking Yebosaji, and the Audience Choice Award.


In 2024, she performed as pipa soloist in the ART!ON POP Concert, part of the Hong Kong Pop Culture Festival organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Wang has been recently invited to perform with various orchestras, including the TaipeiChinese Orchestra, Suzhou Chinese Orchestra, Little Giant Chinese Chamber Orchestra, Kaohsiung Chinese Orchestra, NTUA Chinese Orchestra, and the Chiuko Traditional Orchestra. Her repertoire includes major concerti such as Song of Heaven and Earth, Late Autumn, Pipa Concerto, The Masks, The Civil and the Martial, Night Break, Clouds and Blossoms, Yao Ji,
Blessing, The Heroic Sisters of the Grassland, and Spring and Autumn.

With versatile in style and expression, Wang has also been active in contemporary music and music theatre in recent years. She has premiered a range of innovative works, including the pipa concerto Misty Rain with Frost, Interaction for pipa and percussion, Stardust for pipa and chamber ensemble, Fierce for solo pipa, and the music theatre production The Tower of Babel.
